So you
want to have a baby – that’s marvelous!!
It should, after all, be simple enough, or so you may have
always assumed.
If
your own fertility and that of your partner is normal there will
be roughly a 25% chance of becoming pregnant as a result of unprotected
intercourse during the fertile period of each cycle. With months
of trying it is expected that about 85% couples will achieve a
pregnancy by the end of the first year.
You
and your partner have tried for months, perhaps for even more
than a year. But despite sexual intercourse without birth control,
you've been unable to conceive a child. This is not helped by
the apparent ease that others around you seem to have in conceiving;
your sister having her second baby, your friend having a termination
of pregnancy, babies in ads and all over TV – everyone is
having a baby except you – even people who don’t want
one !!!!
If you've been trying to conceive for more than a year, there's
a good chance that something may be interfering with your reproductive
function.
Infertility,
also known as subfertility, is the inability to conceive a child
within one year of unprotected intercourse. Infertility may be
due to a single cause in either you or your partner, or a combination
of factors that may prevent a pregnancy from occurring or continuing.
It affects about 15% of couples.
